Convection Lab
Page One
This
lab provided students with an opportunity to observe convection currents
as they were created within a beaker of water. The currents were
made more visible by the addition of corn meal. A "control" beaker
of cold water was at rest on their table and was not agitated in any way.
Students were asked to make comparison drawings as well as written comments
comparing the contents of the two beakers. At the end of the heating cycle,
a pinch of instant coffee was added to both beakers. Again, students
were asked to compare the dissolving and diffusion of the coffee in both
beakers. Conclusions were written regarding their observations.
