Freezing Point Depression
Lab #1
Page One
This
exercise required students to record temperatures and make written observations
as they stirred a mixture of snow slush and several different kinds of
melting agents. The "control" portion of just snow slush (snow &
water) was performed first with the students stirring and recording temperatures
for seven minutes. The control segment of the experiment was
followed by identical sessions using various melting agents. Temperature
data were graphed and the graphs were used to form conclusions regarding
the ability of the melting agents to depress the freezing point of water.
Additionally, students were required to measure the volume of liquid and
volume of slush remaining at the end of the stirring cycle. These
data allowed students to form conclusions regarding the efficiency of each
melting agent.
