This lab gave students their first experience with Bunsen burners. The activity was preceded by a lesson in open flame safety including how to use the fire blanket and fire extinguisher. The lab provided them with an opportunity to practice burner safety and safe heating practices prior to moving on to more complex experiences with open flame. The lab also allowed them to observe and compare how two different types of glass tubing reacted to the heat of the burner flame. Students were required to record observations about the behavior of the two types of tubing and make a written comparison. Some students quickley learned from personal experience that hot glass looks a lot like cold glass.
