Replacement Reactions Lab Page One
The first phase of this lab involved a reaction between H2SO4 and MgCO3. In the second phase, students reacted H2SO4 with Mg ribbon. In both reactions, students trapped the gases generated by the and made tests to determine flammability, ability to support combustion, ability to enhance combustion and gas density compared to air. Students were then required to evaluate their data and write a comparison of the physical properties of the reactants, the thermal characteristics of the reactions and the physical and chemical properties of the gaseous products. Other products were not analyzed due to lack of time, materials and equipment.
