This lab exercise gave students more experience with the triple beam balance. They were required to measure the mass of several different items individually then measure the total mass of 6-20 of the item. The average mass of the group of items was then calculated and compared to the mass of the single item. Students were also required to measure out 4g of salt in a container to an accuracy of plus or minus 100 mg and deliver it to their teacher for comparison with a standard mass. Although students worked in teams, each partner was responsible for massing a different set of items.
